Good Gifts
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights … James 1:17
While watching a program on Native American Artists, I listened to a woman, who made very unique sculptures of humans, explain her love of feeling the wax and clay under her fingernails as she created something from nothing.
Her comment prompted me to think about the created world and all it contains ... not just the basic material things like trees and flowers and birds and all kinds of animals ... and people ... but all of the other wonderful gifts which are a part of created things ... such as voices to speak and sing, coming from humans and animals and insects even ... and hands which heal and paint and write and play instruments and make clothes and prepare food. These aren’t just the necessities of life, although many are, of course. But many abilities are bonus gifts that give us great pleasure as we marvel at incredible works of art, or our hearts soar with a symphony out under the stars.
The next time you create something beautiful, comfort a broken heart, help a student with a difficult math problem, sing a song of praise, or play in the dirt in your garden ... lift up your eyes and heart and know that God has imparted all of those gifts to you out of His own creativity ... first forming you from the dust of this earth, and eventually shaping you, with all of your uniqueness, in your mother’s womb … and also out of His love and purpose and plan for you to serve Him and others during your journey here. That is cause for the celebration of life … and your life!
