Matthew 3:13-17 Devotional

Devotional: A Call to Obedience and Faith

Who is this man? He is not well known; he is not a religious leader, but there is something divine about him as he humbles himself, seeking to fulfill a greater purpose. As he enters the water, the anticipation builds. And then, something extraordinary happens - divine affirmation that changes the course of history. He is divine!

Matthew 3:13-17

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me? ” 15 Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then, John allowed him to be baptized. 16 When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.” -- Matthew 3:13-17 (CSB)

This passage of scripture shows all three members of the Trinity being active. In fact, the audible voice of God is heard only three times in the New Testament. Imagine how you would feel standing beside the river waiting to be baptized. This spot would be Holy. Did the bystanders hear the voice of God? Scripture doesn’t directly answer that; however, Scripture does tell us that a voice from heaven announced, "This is my son." I believe the people present heard the voice and were forever changed by this engagement with Jesus.

This moment marks the beginning of Jesus' public ministry and highlights His humility and obedience. Despite being sinless, Jesus undergoes baptism to set an example and align Himself with humanity. The divine affirmation reinforces His identity and mission, reminding us of His unique relationship with the Father and His purpose to redeem the world. How does Jesus' willingness to be baptized, despite being sinless, inspire you to act with humility and obedience in your own life? In what ways can you seek to fulfill God's purpose for your life, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone or facing challenges? How can you cultivate a deeper awareness of your identity in Christ and live in a way that pleases God, just as Jesus did?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of Jesus, who humbly submitted to baptism to fulfill all righteousness. Help us to follow His example of humility and obedience in our own lives. May we seek to fulfill Your purpose, even when it challenges us. Remind us of our identity in Christ and guide us to live in a way that pleases You. Fill us with Your Spirit, and let Your love and affirmation be our constant encouragement. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
