Waiting on God

A blog about people's thoughts, writings, and lives as followers of Jesus waiting on God.

Matthew 6:19-24 Devotional

Over time, the garden becomes chaotic with the struggle of weeds, dying plants, and misplaced beauty. Soon, more aggressive exotic species took over the garden, and the gardener had the ugliest garden in the neighborhood. Ultimately, the gardener's vanity leads to his garden's downfall.

Matthew 6:19-24 (CSB)

"Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!"

In Matthew 6:19-24, Jesus addresses the motivation behind what we do or say, emphasizing sincerity in our motivation for our actions. He reminds us that our actions, unlike the man who wanted the best garden in the neighborhood, should not be for drawing attention to ourselves but for a genuine connection with God. When He refers to accumulating treasures in heaven instead of on earth, He highlights the temporary quality of material goods and the lasting significance of spiritual wealth. The phrase "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" invites us to examine our priorities and what we truly value in life.

How do we apply Jesus’ teaching to our daily life? We need to consider our daily lives and ask ourselves:

1.     What drives my actions?

2.     Is it the approval and admiration of others I seek?

3.     Is it a sincere desire to honor God?

Spend a few moments reflecting on areas where you might seek others' approval at the expense of your spiritual growth. Jesus might suggest you shift your focus to actions that nurture a life of honest faith and love. Instead of loud, “pious” prayers, pray privately. We should help others discreetly and give generously with humility. Let your innermost being reflect the teachings of Christ, making your faith a living testimony.

Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for the wisdom found in Your Word. Help us to live with sincerity and humility, seeking not the praise of men but the approval of Your heart. Guide our actions, thoughts, and desires so that they reflect our love for You. Teach us to store our treasures in heaven and find joy in spiritual riches. Strengthen our resolve to live for Your glory each day. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
