Matthew 9:1-7 Devotional

The Forgiving of the Paralytic

Read Matthew 9:1–7

Read Mark 2:1-12

Matthew 9:1-7 is a powerful passage showcasing both Jesus’ authority and His compassion. The religious leaders in the crowd silently question Him—how can He claim to forgive sins? But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, responds with a profound truth: He doesn’t just have the power to heal physically, but He has the greater authority to restore souls. He proves this by telling the paralyzed man to rise and walk, demonstrating that His words carry divine power.

Matthew 9:1-7 presents a brief account of the same story found in Mark 2, so we need to refer to Mark for the complete narrative. The Gospel of Mark contains one of the best-known stories in the entire Bible. This engaging tale revolves around friends eager to bring one of their companions to Jesus for healing. They will go to great lengths to achieve this.

This story highlights two key aspects of Jesus:

  1. His ability to meet our most profound need — spiritual healing. The man came seeking physical restoration, but Jesus first addressed his soul. Often, we ask for external changes in our lives when, in reality, our greatest need is to be reconciled with God.
  2. The power of faith and friendship. The man’s friends showed extraordinary faith by doing whatever it took to bring him to Jesus. Their actions remind us that sometimes we need others to help us draw near to God, especially in moments when we feel spiritually paralyzed.

Practical Personal Application:

Consider your own life—are there areas where you need healing beyond the physical or external circumstances? Are there burdens you carry that only God’s forgiveness can lift? Sometimes, we are like the paralyzed man, in need of Jesus’ touch. Other times, we are called to be like his friends, bringing others to Jesus through encouragement, prayer, and support.

Today, take a moment to reflect on those around you who need to experience God’s grace. Is there someone who could use your faith, love, and kindness to draw closer to Him? Perhaps a struggling friend, a hurting family member, or even someone who has distanced themselves from God. Be the person who carries them toward hope.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for seeing not just our physical needs, but our deepest spiritual wounds. Thank You for Your power to heal and restore. Help me to trust You, not only in seeking answers for my life but in knowing that You are the answer. Give me the faith of these friends—to bring others closer to You, to believe in Your authority, and to never hesitate in sharing Your grace. Strengthen me where I feel weak, and help me walk in the confidence that I am forgiven and renewed by Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
